Dr. Juan A. Nazario-Serrano

Dr. Juan A. Nazario-Serrano holds a doctorate in Clinical Psychology from Albizu University and two certifications in Substance Use Disorders; he is also a certified substance abuse counselor. He has multiple publications in national and international scientific journals and books on topics related to sexual and gender diversity, psychological assessment, psychopathology, and substance use and co-occurring disorders. He recently published the book "Problematic Substance Use: Foundations, Intervention, and Diversity."

Dr. Nazario-Serrano has served as a director, consultant, clinical psychologist, and mental health advisor for multiple community-based organizations in Puerto Rico.

Likewise, he has advanced cutting-edge public policies from a public health perspective to address problematic substance use on the island.

He has been a faculty member for over 22 years at Albizu University, where he coordinates and mentors Recinto Solidario, a program whose mission is to provide assistance to people experiencing homelessness to reduce harm associated with mental health conditions, problematic substance use, and/or physical health issues. At Albizu University, he designed and coordinated several specialized curricula on substance use disorders, including the Clinical Training Program in Substance Use Disorders (ACTUS) and the Clinical Training Program in Substance Use Disorders and Integrated Health (ACTUSSI).

He currently directs the Trauma-Informed Substance Use Disorder Training Program (ATUSIT) at Albizu University, and works with Iniciativa Comunitaria de Investigación, Inc. (ICI), where for over 20 years he has developed, implemented, and directed programs serving people with substance use disorders, co-occurring conditions, and other vulnerable populations.
